Measuring long-term blood sugar levels using the haemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) test is one of the most important tests you can do to monitor how your current diet and lifestyle support your long-term health. The test measures average blood sugar (blood glucose) in the body over the past three months, which is something that is greatly influenced by diet and daily lifestyle choices. It is essential to maintain average blood sugar levels within the normal range. Elevated levels indicate that the body's ability to regulate blood sugar using insulin may be compromised, requiring action on your part. This is because elevated blood sugar levels can lead to the development of type 2 diabetes and, over time, damage many of the body's systems, such as the eyes, nerves and blood vessels. The good news is that our health is in our own hands. According to the WHO (World Health Organization), people should do the following to help prevent type 2 diabetes and its complications: – achieve and maintain a healthy body weight; – be physically active – perform at least 30 minutes of regular moderate-intensity activity on most days. More activity is required for weight management; – eat a healthy diet, avoiding sugar and saturated fats; and – avoid tobacco use – smoking increases the risk of diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Changes in the body's ability to regulate blood sugar are a slow process, and even if the results using the HbA1c test may be good today, a person's diet and lifestyle choices could still indicate that this could change in the long term. For this reason, we have introduced our own HbA1c test so that you can get a clear starting point on your journey to health. It measures your long-term blood sugar level today and also takes into account how your current diet and lifestyle support your future health.
